The article “An identified case of poliomyelitis: contribution to diagnosis in ancient human remains”, co-authored by Sofia Wasterlain, professor and researcher at the Department of Life Sciences, has won 1st place in the I Contest of Articles on Poliomyelitis and Post-Polio Syndrome, organized by the University of Burgos, UBU Investiga and Rotary Club of Burgos.

The study describes the skeletal remains of an 82-year-old man diagnosed with poliomyelitis in childhood, who experienced muscle atrophy and weakness throughout his adult life. By documenting both the primary skeletal alterations caused by polio and the secondary effects acquired during life, the article makes an innovative contribution to the diagnosis of poliomyelitis in osteoarchaeological assemblages.

The article is available in open access: doi.org/10.1537/ase.231108
