The Department of Life Sciences is now one of the eleven departments of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Coimbra. Created in June 2009, it combines teaching and research in the areas of Anthropology, Ecology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Microbiology. It has 140 PhDs, one of the strongest research teams in our country. The teaching staff is highly diversified and specialised, comprising 68 professors who teach 3 undergraduate degrees, 13 master's degrees and 3 doctoral programmes. Through its 9 research centres and other associated structures, it has a vast international network of collaborations and research projects. It publishes around 300 indexed scientific articles every year and has completed around 120 Master's dissertations and 20 PhD theses.
