DCT Master's student in Geological and Mining Engineering João Caetano participated in the NORSEAT project campaign: Storegga and beyond - North Sea tsunami deposits offshore Shetland Islands.
The project, led by Professor Marc De Batist, is funded by the Belgium Science Policy Office (BELSPO) and involves the universities of Ghent, Dundee, Heidelberg and Coimbra.
The ongoing research focuses on sedimentary signatures of extreme events and the determination of sea level evolution in that area (app. 60°N), during the Holocene.

João Caetano developed tasks in the acquisition of geophysical data (Multibeam, Sísmica and Sparker) in three fjords of the Shetland Islands.
The campaign took place aboard the oceanographic vessel RV Belgica II between November 30th and December 9th, 2022.
Pedro Costa was chief scientist of the mission of the international team of 12 scientists that carried out work on the proximal platform of this Scottish archipelago.
The NORSEAT project will run with annual oceanographic campaigns until December 2025.
