Special Sessions
Track: 2.6 Accessibility
The European Commission notes that in the EU 27 in 2018, there were about 87 million people with disabilities and forewarns limitations in access to health care and the deterioration of economic activity due to COVID-19, what should increase the prevalence of disability in the coming years (EC, 2020). This reality should encourage revitalization and upgrading of the tourism research and, consequently, of the tourism industry approaches, boosting sustainability and human diversity in tourist destinations in a post-pandemic period. In this sense, this session seeks to foster the debate around accessible and sustainable tourism exploring emerging paradigms and co-creating knowledge to add value and consolidate the foundations of tourism ecosystems. The goal of this session is, therefore, to provide a forum for focused discussions on different approaches to enhance a better articulation between accessible tourism and human diversity, under a sustainability perspective.

Track: Geography
This special session intends to provide an overview on the current debate on spatial planning in coastal areas considering a wide range of constraints and possible solutions regarding adaptations. Coastal areas are territories that integrate multiple economic circuits and are often located in urbanized areas, with high population density and, consequently, are very exposed to urban pressure and real estate speculation. They are also vulnerable environments, highly exposed to climate change and, consequently, to rising sea levels and coastal erosion, which clearly threaten the livelihood of coastal communities, their natural and socio-economic systems, thus posing a crucial question regarding urban regeneration. In literature two sets of variables are often used to assess the degree to which the potential of systems may be affected: one set concerning human or demographic sensitivity and another related to land use sensitivity. Thus, regarding sustainability, management and planning instruments are crucial and will be considered to this session.
Topics
- Spatial planning;
- Coastal areas;
- Tourism sustainability;
- Climate change adaptations;
- Coastal communities.

Co-creation is increasingly discussed in tourism academia with the number of publications steadily growing. However, fragmentation in theoretical endeavour and diversity in application of the concept may hinder the capture of its full potential to address current global challenges. Co-creation describes collaborative and participatory practices to create value to a diversity of actors. It thus fits the characteristics and the demands of current societies which are built on democratisation of social relations, institutions and processes, as well as the values of sustainable development. But how well is co-creation theoretically established in the tourism academia? To what extent is co-creation contributing to community empowerment, participatory policy processes, knowledge creation and dynamics, problem-solving, or value production and consumption? How much do we know about tourists’ willingness to co-create and how they experience their co-creative activities? How and how rapidly are ICT disseminating among suppliers and consumers co-creation practices? To what degree is the co-creation orientation contributing to internalisation of the sustainable development goals for tourism? This thematic session on “Co-creation in Tourism” aims at exploring challenges ahead that may be addressed through the lenses of co-creation and the diverse contributions from the academia.
Contributions to discussion of co-creation theory and practice in tourism are welcome. Accordingly, this special session focuses on the following topics:
- Theoretical paradigms and developments in co-creation in the field of tourism
- Co-creation and the use of collaborative methodologies for tourism development
- Value co-destruction in tourism experiences
- Cognitive processes and behavioural effects of tourist co-creation
- Co-creation, human-centred and interaction design for tourism experiences
- Co-creation, innovation and Living Labs in tourism
- Co-creation and ICT
- Co-creation processes in SME
- Co-creation, tourism planning, governance and community engagement
- Co-creation, storytelling and place branding
- Co-creation contribution to sustainable development goals
- Co-creation beyond human actors
- Case studies on co-creation in tourism

Track: Tourism
Rural tourism increasingly attracts interest from diverse markets, entrepreneurs and development agencies, given its potential for revitalizing rural territories, particularly if well-embedded in local economies, culture and society, integrating local resources, culture and lifestyles. It may include a variety of special interest products, such as nature-based, food & wine, health
& wellness or creative tourism, depending on local specificities. It tends to be a rather small-scale, slow type of tourism, celebrating unique places, their heritage and people. To enhance a territory’s potential for sustainable rural tourism, its resources, actors, potentialities and visitors must be understood and optimally matched, generating benefits for all by co-creating appealing,
inspiring and positively memorable place and people experiences. This is particularly true for rural areas, where tourists seek authenticity and uniqueness, and local actors need to make the best of scarce resources. We welcome empirical and conceptual contributions discussing these themes, within the topics below.

Cooperation, competition, and coopetition coexist among the tourism stakeholders and are vital to sustainable development. Firms cooperate to co-create value, and at the individual level, they compete to value appropriation of the created collective value. In this context, the usual coopetition cycle in the tourism sector can provide sustainable advantages. Tourism Coopetition is a dyadic behaviour of cooperating and competing simultaneously between two or more players in a tourism destination. In this Special session, we invite you to submit studies that contribute to understanding the current dynamics of competitive and cooperative relationships in tourism and hospitality and the tendency to hybrid behaviour, namely coopetition. The management of these dynamics is a driver of tourism competitiveness to achieve a sustainable context that seeks a better balance between all actors involved, minimising the adverse effects of competition and, at the same time, maximising the positive impact of cooperation.
Topics
- Alliances, Partnerships, and networks for sustainability in the tourism sector
- Tourism competitiveness for sustainable Destinations
- Tourism cooperation or Tourism Coopetition for sustainability
- Strategic management of networks in tourism and hospitality for sustainability
- Drivers to compete, cooperate and coopete in tourism sector
- Tourism Governance models for sustainable development
- Opportunities and threats of tourism coopetition for sustainability

Recent studies on smart tourist destinations tend to focus on the smartness of the managerial strategies and procedures of Destination Management Organisations (DMOs), following previous extensive research on this topic which privileged smart solutions aimed at visitors. In this context, the ability of DMOs to effectively coordinate the considerable variety of destination-based tourism stakeholders is consensually considered paramount to build de facto smart destinations. In order to do so, DMOs are expected to adopt open-source interorganisational information systems (IOIS) fostering coordination and cooperation between relevant tourism players. Relevant research on this topic further considers these systems as instrumental to foster destinations’ capabilities in terms of the structuring of tourism products, thus attenuating the role and power of external intermediaries. However, so far, only a relatively scarce number of tourism destinations was able to successfully adopt these collaborative IOIS. This special sessions aims to provide a reality-check regarding the benefits, challenges and tendencies of IOIS adopted by DMOs as well as to critically analyse its potential role for the competitiveness of smart destinations

Neuroscience has been combined with cognitive science, giving rise to cognitive neuroscience which studies the neural substrates of human cognition, attention, memory, emotion,
language, movement, etc. Subsequently, neuroscience has been applied to (or combined with) other fields of study, such as psychology - giving rise to neuropsychology - and economics -
giving rise to neuroeconomics and the combination of both has given rise to neuromarketing. The application of neuroscience to tourism is a very recent field, however, given the
importance of tourists& choices about destinations and tourism products, it is a topic that is gaining ground in research. Based on the above, this special session aims to highlight the growing importance of cognitive neuroscience techniques applied to tourism, hospitality, and museology in the context of the effectiveness of tourism destinations. A considerable body of
recent studies highlights the relevance of emotions in several areas of tourism, namely: in holiday activities, the experience of attending festivals; the experience of visiting theme parks;
adventure tourism; shopping tourism; tourism in heritage sites, and visiting scenic spots, and museums. The “authentic” experiences validated by the fruition of museological spaces, as
well as social and cognitive neuroscience applied to museology and museography, show the important role that emotions and the tourist experience can play in the enhancement and
effectiveness of tourist destinations. Studies already developed indicate that this dynamic can contribute to the satisfaction and loyalty of tourists in tourist destinations. Adding the importance attributed to social and cognitive neuroscience in the dynamics of the emotional impression or the emotions caused by the experience of being in contact with a certain museum space. In this sense, this special session features studies that involve the action of neuroscience on tourism in a museological dynamic and on a path that demonstrates its
importance for the enhancement and effectiveness of tourist destinations.
Topics

- Neurosciences applied in tourism and hospitality
- Tourism destination choice
- Tourism destination image and destination promotion
- The role of emotions in the tourism experiences
- Museology and museography as a tourism complement to the destination

Track: 1.6 Entertainment
Leisure, events, and animation configure an important territory of current society that requires further study to broaden contributions, in order to increase knowledge and reflection on them. The characteristics, challenges and perspectives of leisure, events and entertainment, currently and in the future, have a relational dichotomy very close to the idiosyncratic sphere of the individual. Consumption patterns have undergone major transformations, the tourist seeks his motivation in areas such as: immersion in destinations, close ties with residents, consumption of local products, active tourism, among others. The role of entertainment, leisure and events in today's society enables a connection with the place, creating memorable, authentic, unusual and hedonistic experiences. Understanding these areas will enable the tourism destination to be at the forefront of knowledge and practice, allowing the destination to become competitive and stimulate demand.

Films are one of the most influential phenomena of modern society, that motivate people to travel to a destination (Oshriyeh & Capriello, 2022). Film-induced tourism includes the visits made to a destination or attraction resulting from its featuring in cinema, films, television series or promotional videos (Cardoso et al., 2017). Due to the great attraction power of film productions, which bring crowds to movie theatres and the growing interest and consumption of content available on streaming platforms (Netflix, HBO, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, among others) this is a topic that needs more academic development. Not only is it important to continue working on more recurrent themes such as the image of destinations and the presentation of case studies, but it is also essential to investigate new themes, like the ones presented below.

Track: 3. Management. 3.1 Marketing and Digital Marketing
Food tourism can take on a variety of forms, from that of a nascent sector to that of a main factor in travellers & destination selections, depending on how it is conceptualised, and food services are implemented and marketed (Andersson et al., 2017; Tsai and Wang, 2017). Environmental and social concerns play a role in the choosing of tourism activities. There is an increasing amount of people going on vacation who look for places that have a reputation for being ecologically conscious and ethical in their practises around the production and consumption of food (Mossberg and Eide, 2017; Nyberg et al., 2022). Future food services must be focused on sustainability, also encouraging their workers to join in attempts to innovate environmentally friendly services (Chou et al., 2018). Marketing strategies around food tourism are increasingly focused on the role of sustainability as an attraction factor (Ellis et al., 2018) both at businesses and destinations levels. However, previous studies have demonstrated that people tend to be more conscious of their impact on the environment when they are at home in
comparison to when they are out on vacation (Holmes et al., 2019; Testa et al., 2019). To fill this gap, this special session is focused on discussing the integration of sustainability marketing on food tourism experiences. We welcome studies that employ a variety of methodologies, such as qualitative (e.g., grounded theory, (virtual) ethnography, visual methods, case studies, and so on), quantitative (e.g., text mining, machine learning, and so on), and mixed methods.

Track: 3.4 Human Resources
The global economy, based on knowledge and technological evolution, has brought new challenges ofcompetitive differentiation to organizations, particularly organizations based in services providing, such has the tourism industry (Junrat et al., 2014; Vafai, 2016). Tourism counts with the human resources as a competitive advantage to the organizations since it influences the quality of the final product presented to the tourists as well as to the satisfaction and loyalty of the customers of the different tourist destinations (Giannakis and Harker, 2014). The qualifications of the human resources of the tourism sector are fundamental for the development and planning of the different tourist destinations, and the vocational training and development of professional skills but especially personal and/or behavioral skills are key factors that allow the elevation of the level of competitiveness and sustainability of destinations, responding this way to the constant evolution of the demands of tourists and the tourist market. Organizations should invest in the qualification of their workers, through education and vocational training according to (Bañuls, Rodríguez and Jiménez, 2007; Moura, Xavier and Silva, 2011; Nordhaug, 1998; Wagenaar, 2014) sustainable interests and objectives. In this sense, the improvement of skills of the workers, both professional and personal, are key factors for the development and planning of more sustainable tourism destinations as well as the global improvement of competitiveness and quality of the sector and also allows to respond to the evolution of the labour market and the demands of more sustainability concerned tourists (Bañuls et al., 2007; Bañuls, 2009). We invite contributions and different perspectives that focus on the trends and challenges of the tourism sector, that allow better educational planning to address concerning destination sustainability.

This session aims to establish an important space for discussion on the main practices, trends and opportunities around nature and adventure tourism. All potential stakeholders are invited to participate and submit proposals for a broad discussion around innovation in nature and adventure experiences. An attempt will be made to combine both scientific knowledge and empirical experience around different case studies, seeking a fruitful debate that encourages the sustainability of the products.

Track: 1.10 Tourism products
Roads are, essentially, infrastructures to support travel; intermediation spaces between origin and destination for different types of mobility. For historical reasons, for the territorial context they cross, for some specific thematic element, they can rise to the status of a tourist element per se, surpassing their immediate infrastructural function and becoming the motivation and destination of the trip itself. The crossing of more remote territories, outside the traditional and more massified tourist circuits and destinations, gives some of these roads an iconic, unique value, often associated with the authenticity of the places and their people. The preference for differentiated and authentic territories, communities and experiences is, in fact, one of the trends in tourist demand, accentuated during and after the recent pandemic context. The growing tourist dynamics/notoriety associated with some roadways – such as the National Road 2 (EN2) in Portugal, the Ruta de la Plata in Spain, the North Coast 500 in Scotland, the Atlantic Way in Ireland or the Blue Highway in Scandinavia – are some examples of this tourist enhancement. In light of these (and other) reasons, it is important to analyze the role that roads with these characteristics have had in the tourist development of these territories and in the pursuit of development strategies and territorial cohesion, valuing the existing endogenous potential and benefiting local communities, through attracting new tourist demands.

Tourism is a rapidly growing industry that has the potential to provide economic and social benefits to local communities. However, the negative impacts of tourism, such as overcrowding and environmental degradation, have led to increasing calls for sustainable tourism practices. Whilst planning is essential for tourism to be sustainable (Saarinen et al., 2019), an important aspect of sustainable tourism is the behaviour of tourists themselves. Tourist behaviour has been shown to significantly impact the sustainability of destinations, and several factors influence tourists’ engagement in sustainable behaviour while travelling. By implementing strategies to promote sustainable practices among tourists, destinations can help ensure that tourism continues to provide economic and social benefits without causing harm to the environment or local communities and potentially improve the place being visited, according to the regenerative tourism logic (Dredge, 2022). The contemporary scenario’s complexity calls for a deeper understanding of how to promote sustainable behaviour among tourists to ensure the long-term viability of tourism destinations.

The Tourism and Hospitality (T&H) sector is one of the largest and fastest growing industries, with highly labor intensive, in the global economy and has significant multiplier effect on employment in other related sectors. T&H is among the top-job creating sectors but, the nature and quality also matter, especially when this is a sector marked by high levels of mobility of all types and with a decades-long of low reputation in working conditions.The Human Resources (HR) are the main source of value and competitive advantage in the T&H sector, which is highly dependent on people to drive innovation, deliver quality tourism services and keep up with global trends. Although there is still a core pool of low skilled jobs, the T&H industry is changing and higher-level skills are been required, offering new career opportunities. So, T&H has also become a growing career choice and higher education institutions play an essential role.

The Global Report on Women in Tourism published in 2019 considers how the situation of women in the tourism sector has evolved and provides a thorough assessment of tourism’s contribution towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. The key findings show that the majority of the tourism workforce worldwide is female, the wage-gap is smaller in the tourism industry, tourism offers women greater opportunities for leadership roles, technology is stimulating female entrepreneurship and policymakers are putting measures in place to shorten the gender gap as society is more aware of the importance of gender equality in tourism. Even though, according to the World Economic Forum and its Global Gender Gap Report published in 2022, the global gender gap will only be closed an incredible 132 years from now. We’re only making
small steps – if any steps forward at all. As a society, we need to achieve strategic goals for the acceleration of this process. Furthermore, we need to focus on the forces that break and stop those advances. The first step is to identify and name them: women in tourism, employment, entrepreneurship, education, leadership, community-based tourism, gender pay gap, regional findings, digital platforms and technology, hotels and accommodations, tour operators, tour guides, among many others. Yet, the tourism sector has been going through a really tough time, for almost three years now. It was smashed by the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, it rebounded strongly in 2022 driven by the so-called “revenge spend”, and now, the sector faces an uncertain outlook again as the global economic slowdown and the fallout from Russia’s war in Ukraine brings new challenges, exposing millions of vulnerable women and children’s refugees. For all these reasons, tourism (if managed responsibly) can be a great tool to bring world peace and accelerate the positive impact on society and can be a great ally in achieving gender equity. But tourism businesses are being hit by rising costs and tight labour markets. How will the tourism sector boost recovery in the short term and create a stronger, more sustainable, equal and fair tourism economy? We invite you all to share your insights about these societal challenges in this special session of DSOTT’23.
