Coimbra
Coimbra, home of the oldest university in the country, is a city located on the banks of the Mondego River with about 319 km2 and 140,000 inhabitants. Capital of the district, it is the largest city in the central region of Portugal which, by its social, historical, cultural and patrimonial context acquires a prominent role in the regional panorama.
Named by Afonso Henriques as the first capital of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra has seen the most emblematic names of the Lusophone world pass through it, and the University of Coimbra is responsible for the formation of a large number of generations, which is why it is still regarded as one of the most important and prestigious educational institutions in Portugal.
In 2013, Coimbra saw the whole University of Coimbra - Alta and Sofia inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, positioning it as one of the most prominent tourist and cultural destinations in Portugal.
It also has a natural landscape rich in gardens, parks and squares scattered throughout the city and that, with a considerable historical and scientific value, allow the practice of a diverse range of activities.
A destination rich in varied gastronomy, those who visit it have the opportunity to try a diverse set of delicacies, typical dishes and conventual sweets recognized throughout the country.
A polysemic city, which is divided into several cities: historical, traditional, university, students' city, architectural, of Fado and Mondego.
