Conditions for admission

1. The following are eligible to apply for the PhD in Contemporary Studies:

a) Holders of a Master’s degree or its legal equivalent;

b) Holders of an undergraduate degree with a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognised by the Scientific Board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra as demonstrating the ability to complete this cycle of studies;

c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognised by the Scientific Board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra as demonstrating the ability to complete this cycle of studies, and applicants must have obtained a course assessment mark of at least 14 (on a 20-point grading scale);

2. The recognition referred to in points b) and c) of the preceding paragraph only gives access to the cycle of studies leading to the doctoral degree and does not confer on its holder the equivalence of an undergraduate or master’s degree, or the recognition thereof.

Ranking criteria

1. Course assessment (a weighting of 70/100)

1.1 School curriculum, taking into account the final mark of the course taken by the applicant (25%)

1.4 Letter of motivation (30%)

2. Interview (a weighting of 30/100)

2.1 Communication and oral skills (20%)

2.2 Knowledge of English and/or other language relevant to the work/publication of the doctoral programme (10%)

2.3 Motivation and interest (20%)

2.4 Ability to analyse, think critically and articulate research perspectives (40%)

2.5 Availability/ability to travel as part of the doctoral activities (10%)

Required documents

  1. Letter of motivation (MANDATORY);
  2. Letter of recommendation no. 1; (MANDATORY);
  3. Letter of recommendation no. 2;
  4. Certificate or diploma of a degree with final grade average or other equivalent document. This must include a document certifying that you have passed the course units, with the corresponding marks (transcript or diploma supplement).
  5. (MANTADORY, except in the case of a course taught at the University of Coimbra);
  6. Master’s degree certificate or diploma with final grade average or other equivalent document. This must include a document certifying that you have passed the course units, with the corresponding marks (transcript or diploma supplement).
  7. (MANTADORY, except in the case of a course taught at the University of Coimbra);
  8. A certificate of any other courses you may have taken, with the programmes and course unit workloads with the corresponding marks (transcripts), if you wish to be receive credits. (MANTADORY, except in the case of a course taught at the University of Coimbra UNDER THE Bologna Process – after 2007/2008);
  9. Proof of qualifications issued by the institution awarding the highest degree, stating the average grade obtained in the course and the grading scale.
  10. (MANDATORY only for overseas graduates whose certificate does not state the average grade);
  11. Copy of a written academic publication/paper (it may be a thesis chapter);
  12. Curriculum vitae (MANDATORY);
  13. Identity document (MANDATORY for overseas applicants only).

NOTE: If the above documents are in a language other than Spanish, French or English, they must be translated into Portuguese by a translator recognised by the Portuguese diplomatic mission.

Successful candidates will be required to submit the original certified documents at the time of enrolment and registration.
