Republican Guard – A Century of History and Propaganda

José Lima Garcia, integrated researcher at CEIS20 (Group 1 - History, Memory, Public Policies), presents his latest book: Guarda Republicana – Um Século de História e Propaganda.

The presentation will take place at the Vila Nova de Foz Côa Municipal Library on 24 November 2023 at 5.30pm, and will be given by José Carlos Venâncio (retired Full professor from the University of Beira Interior), with the presence of authors Ana Rute Garcia and José Luís Lima Garcia.

The book is informative and solid in its argumentation. It is undoubtedly useful for the factual information it provides the reader and for the authors’ reading of the facts they present. The appendices, especially the one on the biographies of the politicians and intellectuals of the First Republic who came from the Guarda district, make for a pleasant and useful reading. It shows how an inland district was able to provide the First Republic with intellectuals and politicians of the highest calibre, who played such a decisive role in the course of national history.

I don’t want to end these words, in lieu of a preface, without making a few comments about the text itself. It’s clear, precise, elegant and, above all, evocative, which is why the publisher and the official organisations have decided to support its publication. As we say in "Beiras", well done for this gesture!
