“’Enseñando fomenta’: the role of associations in agricultural development in the 19th century”

Published in Vol. 22, No. 2 of the Revista de História da Sociedade e da Cultura journal and written by Carlos Faísca, a researcher at CEIS20 and the ReSEED project, this article examines, from a comparative perspective, the role of agricultural associations in two of the largest agricultural regions in Spain and Portugal, Extremadura and Alentejo respectively. The author concludes that, although they fell short of their objectives, the Spanish region’s farmer’s associations were not only quicker to act, but were also more active.
