Heritage and Academia

The celebration of the 10th anniversary of the classification of the University of Coimbra, Alta e Sofia, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is particularly important in view of the decade that has passed, but above all in view of the strategy for the protection and promotion of this asset, which is projected into the future, based on the application of the best practices and knowledge available in the field of cultural heritage. Two priorities for achieving this goal are to bring heritage closer to the community and to strengthen the link between heritage and scientific knowledge.

UNESCO has recognised the universal and exceptional value of the University of Coimbra's heritage, which goes far beyond what was inscribed on the 2013 List. The resulting challenge for heritage management is immense and requires enormous attention and deep commitment from all, especially the Academy, if it is to be successfully met. This mission, based on a policy of protection, care and rehabilitation, is fundamental to honouring the past, adapting the various structures to the needs of the present and preparing the heritage for the challenges of the future.

A paradigmatic example to be mentioned here is the Casa das Ardenas, home to the CEIS20 research unit, which is undergoing a major refurbishment to increase the robustness of its surrounding environment and improve working conditions for all users.

We are a university that values and cares for its assets on a daily basis, with drive and innovation. This is how we ensure the conditions for the development of our activities at the level of excellence that is required of us!
