Shaping the cities of the future: the interdisciplinary role of geography in mitigating climate change

Geography is at a crossroads, where merging new technologies and interdisciplinary research have become an essential keystone. By aligning our understanding of this complex and evolving world, we can chart a course towards a sustainable future, where science and innovation come together to protect our planet for future generations and to ensure that our cities can thrive in the face of climate change.

In exploring this dynamic interface between technology, environment and society, geography emerges as a fundamental pillar of interdisciplinary research. In this context, CEIS20, with its interdisciplinary nature, provides a space where geographers collaborate with researchers from different scientific fields within the Centre. By pooling our knowledge, we can tackle climate change in depth. This interdisciplinarity is not just rhetoric, but an essential approach to tackling the most pressing challenges facing our planet. Geography plays a vital role in bridging the gap between technology, environment and society, providing knowledge that inspires innovative solutions for our cities.

New technologies are driving this change, such as drones, a tool used in my research, which are revolutionising the way we collect data on the urban environment, making it easier to understand the impact of climate change on our cities. The merger of technology and geography extends to the study of green spaces, population dynamics and the impact of rising temperatures.
