Studying the uncertainties of contemporary complexity

Why do a Doctoral Programme in Contemporary Studies (DEC) at CEIS20, University of Coimbra? In this programme, we prepare a new generation of researchers to better understand and respond to the uncertainties of contemporary complexity, in an intense environment of interdisciplinary knowledge. The DEC promotes the study of complex processes and systems inherent in the relationships between the human, social, and artefact (material and immaterial) fields, through the interactive transformations of time, nature and the environment.

The Doctoral Programme in Contemporary Studies brings together an ambitious and diverse curriculum in the humanities, arts and social sciences (including approaches to life sciences and technologies), cultivating research into interconnected knowledge, based on critical and inclusive thinking. It is composed of a large and distinguished faculty of researchers with a strong international profile.

By actively participating in the training structure of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, doctoral students become part of this research unit’s global ecosystem of disciplinary knowledge, with access to numerous lectures and conferences with national and international experts, complementary training opportunities, integration in scientific project teams, organisation of events and publications, networking and missions, and benefit from a special financial framework to support their research and internationalisation. By promoting transversal skills and knowledge production, our programme prepares young researchers for careers both within and outside academia.

For more information on the programme, visit the dedicated DEC webpage.

The 2nd phase of applications is open until 14 July.
