“Africa in the Jornal da Europa” is the latest article published by CEIS20 researcher Sérgio Neto, included in the book Creating and Opposing Empire. The Role of the Colonial Periodical Press, published by Routledge.

The aim of this article is to analyse the Jornal da Europa, which, during the last years of the First Republic and the military dictatorship, sought to combine colonial propaganda and information, with a special emphasis on culture. Its second phase, which began in late 1926, was even more assertive, with a proliferation of articles on travel impressions, as well as short essays and poems, aimed at enticing potential settlers to take the road to Africa. In this sense, it preceded the colonial propaganda magazine O Mundo Português, published under the auspices of the Estado Novo in the 1930s and 1940s.
