Ph.D. Fellowships 2022-26 | Doctoral Program in Contemporary Studies

The Ph.D. in Contemporary Studies of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Coimbra (CEIS20) aims at training autonomous, imaginative and rigorous researchers in the study of practices, ideas and systems of contemporary and modern societies, approached from interdisciplinary perspectives.

Through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) funding, the Ph.D. Fellowships aim to develop, for a period of up to four years, interdisciplinary research proposals from the perspectives of history, communication sciences, education and digital humanities, political science, geography, among other areas of the humanities, arts and social sciences. These Ph.D. Fellowships are distinguished by the fact that they encourage research that transcends monodisciplinary approaches, in order to build knowledge that articulates or integrates different methodologies, epistemologies and theories for the production of scientific and/or artistic knowledge on aspects of contemporary complex societies.

The candidates' proposals should be aligned with the interdisciplinary research that structures the scientific mission of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, attending to four broad-scope axes: (i) inequalities, borders and mobility; (ii) media and society in the post-digital era; (iii) democracy, present time and memory of dictatorships; (iv) theory in humanities, arts, social sciences and social technologies. Based on imagination and scientific rigor, these axes aim to promote an integrated study of the challenges posed to contemporary societies, as a way of building a space for interaction in an ecology of knowledge insights.
