The Municipality of Coimbra is made up of 31 civil parishes whose origins date back to the Middle Ages and which evolved from the concept of the medieval parishes established by the famous Decretum of Gratian in the 12th century.

The leitmotif of these Open Talks is to understand its administrative, religious and civil evolution over the centuries, which will help us to understand the mental and spatial territory of Coimbra and its parishes, through the analysis of various documents, chronological milestones, the interaction between judicial, municipal and municipal authorities – whose coexistence around the structuring idea of Coimbra has not always been peaceful.

The parishes have not been a stable reality in modern or contemporary times. Despite the reforms that have been carried out, they have survived as the basic administrative units of the territory and have remained the most visible face of power and the state in the eyes of the people.

In fact, not only the urban parishes, but especially the more rural ones, contributed to the consolidation of the ideal of the Municipality of Coimbra, perpetuating by legal and administrative means a wide range of ancient economic, social, political and military ties, some of which have since been recognised as distinctive elements of the tangible and intangible heritage of the region.
