Delcides Marques

He earned a degree in Sociology and Politics from the São Paulo School of Sociology and Politics Foundation (FESP-SP, 2003-2006), supported by a scholarship from the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Fraya Frehse. Following this, he pursued a master's degree in Social Anthropology at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp, 2007-2009), also with FAPESP support and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ronaldo de Almeida. Later, he completed his PhD in Anthropology at the same institution (Unicamp, 2009-2013), with a scholarship from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), under the mentorship of the same supervisor. His research throughout these academic endeavours was eminently focused on ethnographic studies: the first two delved into understanding Pentecostal preaching in Praça da Sé, located in the centre of São Paulo, while the last highlighted the theological-moral development of seminarians in an evangelical institution in the Pernambuco hinterland.

He has served as a professor at the Federal University of the São Francisco Valley (Univasf) since 2010. Within this role, he instructs courses on anthropological theory, Brazilian anthropological thought, and anthropological research. He contributes to the Postgraduate Programme in Politics, Culture and the Environment (PoCAm), focusing on the research line on “Political economy and techniques of government”. His academic interests revolve around various themes. They include, for example, the anthropology of the ancient world; tolerance, justice, and reciprocity; classical studies; secularisation; theology and problems of government; Christianity and contemporaneity; ethics; and political philosophy. Additionally, he is a researcher at KRISIS – Critical Anthropology Laboratory, where he investigates notions that shaped collective life in the ancient world, particularly among the Greeks (and Christians). These notions have formed a foundational vocabulary for contemporary discussions on coexistence and virtue.

Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies at the University of Coimbra (CECH-UC), working under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Frederico Lourenço. His research, supported by a grant from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), focuses on examining the vocabulary of reciprocity in the Iliad. Employing investigative methods that prioritise the analysis of the Greek text, he identifies events within the Homeric epic that shed light on this theme, such as the famous encounter between Glaucus and Diomedes. Throughout this study, he delves into prestigious concepts like hospitality, recognition, exchange, and revenge. His approach to the text involves employing various complementary methods, particularly grammatical study, comparison of translations, and structural analysis. The overarching goal is to produce research that effectively combines anthropological insights with classicism, and vice versa
