José Luís Lopes Brandão, an Associate Professor at the Institute of Classical Studies at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and a researcher at the Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies, focuses on the study of the Latin language, culture and literature as well as the history of Rome. His research has been concentrated on epigrams, Roman novels, biographies and historiography. Noteworthy among the authors he has studied are Martial, Suetonius, the Historia Augusta and Plutarch, on whom he has published various studies and translations. In collaboration with F. Oliveira, he edited two volumes on the history of Rome. In the realm of classical theatre, he has been active in translation and dramatic productions, serving as an actor, director and consultant with the Thíasos theatre group and coordinated the Classical Theatre Festival (FESTEA) (2013-2019).

MAIN PROJECTS

Member of Plutarch And The Founding of An European Identity (coordinated in Coimbra by Delfim Leão).

PI at the Coimbra team of the Grundtvig project, “Ludi Europaei Classici” (Sagunto, Ludere et Discere – Coimbra, FESTEA– Millau, Comité de Jumelage), led by the Ludere et Discere association in Sagunto; project that is the origin of the Ludi Conimbrigenses (see more here).

PI at Coimbra team of the FCT-CAPES Agreement (FCT 2293), “Literature and Politics: construction and diffusion of public personalities portraits in the ancient world” (2014-16), Universy of Coimbra and Federal University of Ouro Preto (Minas Gerais, Brazil).
