Coimbra Global Lectures

For Classicists, the world is their natural habitat. We have learned to navigate broad scales of space and time. We excel at connecting seemingly distant elements and never cease to be amazed by the successive revelations of new discoveries from the classical world and its echoes throughout the centuries.

It is characteristic of Classicists to have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a desire to engage with those at the forefront of understanding, regardless of where they may live or work, or the language they speak. At the Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies (CECH), in Coimbra, a centuries-old university city, our goal is to promote a comprehensive dialogue that spans the compass: North to South, South to North, West to East, and East to West. Our mission is to foster an open exchange of ideas and deepen connections between Europe and the rest of the world in the fields of Classical and Humanistic studies.

This is the purpose of the COIMBRA GLOBAL LECTURES Programme, through which we invite internationally renowned individuals from the various domains of scientific, cultural, artistic, and civic activity our Research and Development Unit specialises in. The lectures will be held annually or semi-annually, in person, and recordings will be made available on CECH's YouTube channel.

Scientific coordination is ensured by Carmen Soares, Margarida Miranda, Delfim Leão, Diogo Ferrer, José Luis Brandão, Paulo Estudante, Susana Marques, and Cláudia Cravo (members of the CECH Board of Directors).

Executive coordination is overseen by Carlos Liz (PhD researcher at CECH).
