Library Science Cabinet and Jorge Peixoto's History of the Press Collection

Jorge Adalberto Peixoto was born in Tortosendo, Covilhã, on April 23, 1920. He graduated in Historical-Philosophical Sciences from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Coimbra. He was responsible for teaching Bibliology and Librarianship for the Librarian-Archivist Programme at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, which he taught from 1961 to 1975. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1973. He was also a visiting professor at the Department of Librarianship and Documentation of the School of Communication and Arts at the University of São Paulo, where he taught, from 1975 to 1976, Organization and Administration of Libraries, Cataloging, Reference, Quantification Program in Librarianship and Documentation, History of Portuguese-Brazilian Bibliographic Collections and collaborated in the postgraduate program.

His collection was acquired by BGUC from the widow, D. Maria das Dores Peixoto, in 1977, and it consists of around 15,000 volumes, with significant holdings related to the History of the Book, Book Arts, Bibliographic Sources and Bibliographic Practices.

Part of this collection, related to library science works, is located in a specific room, providing, together with other works on the same topic, a useful resource for the Information Science programmes of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The Collection on the History of the Press has also been processed and is available. His personal archive is still under preparation.
