Library of Oliveira Martins

The historian Oliveira Martins' collection, made up of around 1,600 specimens, was purchased in 1992 from the Portuguese Missionary Society, with sponsorship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Engenheiro António de Almeida Foundation, the Luso-American Foundation, Tabaqueira and INAPA. This special collection is composed of monographs from the 15th to the 19th century and periodical publications from 17th to the 19th century, in addition to a collection of booklets bound and organized according to the interests and historiographical work produced by Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira Martins: Contemporary Portugal, or themes such as Sebastianism, the History of the Civil War, Memories of India, etc. The acquisition of some pieces of furniture from Oliveira Martins’ work office made it possible to create “a symbolic reconstitution of this spiritual space, in a suitable location in the Library”.

There is a catalogue published by Guimarães Editores, in 2009, a volume included in the Complete Works of Oliveira Martins.

A considerable part of Oliveira Martins' personal papers, mostly made up of correspondence, other manuscripts and personal documentation, is kept in the National Library.
