José Pires da Silva Collection
The collection of colonel medical doctor José Pires da Silva was donated to BGUC by his family in 1997. Most of the documentation gathered by Dr. Pires da Silva is related to Coimbra and its Academic Life and to the Holy Queen Isabel [Rainha Santa Isabel].
An indefatigable researcher of everything that referred to Rainha Santa Isabel, after stamping and registering his collection, it was found that it encompasses 1400 volumes of monographs, the oldest being the Sermon of Rainha Sancta preached at the … Mosteiro da Sancta Clara de Coimbra in the Year of 1679 … by Frei Pantaleão do Sacramento (In Coimbra: in the Printing of Manoel Diaz Printer of the University, 1680), many issues of 190 periodical publications, 911 iconographic items and also 240 highly eclectic sets, where very interesting “ephemera” stand out (lottery tickets, labels, wrapping paper, party programs, etc.), whose gathering started in the 1920s-30s.
