Epistolary of Francisco Augusto Martins de Carvalho

Francisco Augusto Martins de Carvalho was born in 1844 and died in 1921. The archive consists of personal documentation and professional documentation of General Francisco Augusto Martins de Carvalho and his father, Joaquim Martins de Carvalho, journalist, founder and editor of the newspaper "O Conimbricense". The collection was acquired by the General Library of the University of Coimbra in the 1952-1953 academic year.

It contains the originals of studies and articles published by Francisco Augusto Martins de Carvalho, lectures and public addresses, notes and correspondence, as well as newspaper clippings. It includes official correspondence and other documentation relating to his military career and service in Portugal, Mozambique and India, namely the inauguration report of the Infantry Regiment command, letters patent of appointment from the Army, letters patent of decorations, reports, membership diplomas from several scientific academies, certificates of attendance at the biblio-iconographic exhibition and the Historical Exhibition of the 1st centenary of the Peninsular War, programs and tickets for the charitable military party in 1897.

In terms of personal documentation, the archive includes baptism records, property deeds, certificate of purchase of tomb, student certificates, photo albums and microfilm. Among the documents of Joaquim Martins de Carvalho, treasurer of the Hospitals of Coimbra, are his will, certificates of association membership, correspondence, texts of minutes, payment orders from the Property Division of the Hospitals of Conceição, Convalescença and São Lázaro, discharge permit and certificates of examination of expense income accounts from the Coimbra Hospital Administration. There are also documents belonging to his children Gustavo de Miranda Martins de Carvalho, a baptism certificate and an exercise for the 4th year Commercial Law course, and Francisco Miranda Martins de Carvalho, the diploma from the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Lisbon, the license for the Infantry course and the license from the Faculty of Philosophy.
