Here is what you can do:
Alma Mater is the Old Collections Digital Library of the University of Coimbra, made up of a large set of works, mostly published before 1940. Digitized works represent important collections from the rich bibliographic heritage of the libraries of the University of Coimbra, including the General Library, the Library of the Faculty of Law, the Library of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and the Library of the Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
The set currently contains close to 25 000 items and testifies to a ongoing process, begun several years ago, of free and universal availability of important works from the University's heritage. Alma Mater embodies an open access policy, implemented by the digitization, conservation and dissemination of documentation available in the University library network.
In this digital library we find different types of documents, such as old books, manuscripts, letters, photographs, drawings, etc. as well as archives of authors trained at the University of Coimbra, and others who passed through Coimbra, and bequeathed their personal papers and libraries to our collections.
Alma Mater brings together and values several existing digital libraries – such as the General Digital Library, Digital Library of the Faculty of Law, Digital Library of Botany or Digital Library of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities – and other more recent ones, such as the Nabais Conde Maps Collection or the 500 Years-500 Works Digital Collection.
It results from several projects financed by various institutions, including, among others, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, in addition to the University's own funds, which has thus invested in the valorization of the "treasures" it holds.
Alma Mater enables readers to search the entire collections of digital documents in the University's libraries, with the help of common indexes. Readers can also consult each of the documents in detail. Promoting effective coordination of efforts, the Alma Mater project was carried out by the Integrated Library Service of the University of Coimbra (SIIB-UC).
The contents of these digital libraries are partially integrated into Europeana, the major digital project on cultural heritage, under the responsibility of the European Union.
