Opening on 17 November 27 2020

São Pedro Hall

The exhibition «Toda a Redondeza do Mundo: Magalhães-Elcano,1519-1522» [All the Roundness of the World: Magalhães-Elcano,1519-1522], which was part of the official programme of celebrations coordinated by the Mission Structure for the Commemoration of the V Centenary of Circum-Navigation (EMCFM), made available to the visitor more than 30 printed and handwritten works that illustrate that extraordinary feat. The opening featured a presentation by Prof. João Paulo de Oliveira e Costa, and the participation of the President of EMCFM, Dr. José Marques. Among the rarities on display were a first Italian edition (1536) of the in-person account of the unofficial chronicler of the expedition, Antonio Pigafetta, a copy of the Abraham Zacutus' Tables (1502) that accompanied the navigators, and a Commentary on the Psalms (1516) where the first prophetic interpretation of the journeys to the New World, in which the Portuguese and Castilians were involved, was made. This exhibition, curated by Dr. António Eugénio Maia do Amaral, was available in the São Pedro Hall until 18 February 2021, and, after that, it was on display in the intermediiate floor of the Joanina Library, throughout the spring of 2021.
